Common matters
Divorce and family law
Financial disclosures usually include months or years of bank and card statements. In a spreadsheet you can total spending by category, find transfers to unfamiliar accounts, track cash withdrawals and compare stated income with actual deposits.
Discovery and litigation
Productions often include statements as image-based PDFs. Converting them lets your team search every transaction at once instead of paging through exhibits.
Forensic and fraud matters
Tracing funds means following money across accounts and months. A single combined spreadsheet with dates, descriptions and amounts makes patterns visible: round-number transfers, repeated payees and timing that lines up with key events.
Estates and guardianships
Accountings for an estate or guardianship need every transaction listed. Converting the statements is faster than retyping them.
Useful analysis once it's in Excel
- Filter by payee or keyword to pull every transaction involving a person or business.
- Pivot by month to see when spending or deposits changed.
- Sort by amount to surface the largest items for follow-up.
- Combine accounts in one sheet with an account column to trace transfers between them.
Old statements are full of short codes like ACH, POS, XFER and NSF. Our bank statement abbreviations guide explains what they mean.
A check you can explain
For legal work, you need to know the spreadsheet is complete. Every conversion is checked against the statement itself: the opening balance plus all transactions must equal the closing balance. If it doesn't, we show the difference and the rows where the running balance breaks, so you can correct them against the PDF.
That check is simple enough to explain and to repeat in Excel. See how to reconcile a bank statement in Excel. Still, treat the spreadsheet as a working copy. The original statement remains the document of record, and anything you rely on in a filing or report should be checked against it.
Scanned productions
Scanned statements are supported. They're slower and less accurate than digital PDFs, so the balance check matters more. Tips for better results are on our scanned statements page. Each upload can be up to 200 pages and 25 MB. Split larger productions into separate statements so each gets its own check.
Confidentiality: exactly what happens to a file
- Files are processed in memory and not stored by StatementCheap.
- Converted rows are sent back to your browser and not kept on our servers.
- We keep only metadata: page count, date and whether it reconciled, for billing and abuse prevention.
- Extraction runs on Cloudflare Workers AI, open models hosted by Cloudflare. Under Cloudflare's commitments, inputs and outputs aren't retained after the response, and customer content isn't used for training. No third-party AI company sees the files.
- Payments go through Stripe, and all traffic is encrypted with HTTPS.
Before uploading, confirm that this processing is consistent with any protective order, confidentiality agreement and your firm's policies. Only upload documents you're authorized to process.
Getting statements
If a party's account has been closed, records can still usually be requested from the bank. See how to get bank statements from a closed account.
