How to download your American Express statement as a PDF

Log in at americanexpress.com and open "Statements & Activity". Amex's help says to select the statement you need from the list to get a PDF copy, including older statements that have been archived. Archived statements become available online within 24 hours.

Can American Express export Excel or CSV directly?

Amex's help describes two downloads besides the PDF statement. Your recent activity and past six billing statements can be downloaded to Quicken, QuickBooks or as a CSV file from your online account. Separately, your previous two years of transactions can be sorted, filtered and downloaded as a PDF, Excel or CSV file. So the Quicken and QuickBooks route reaches back only six statements, much less than the two-year Excel or CSV window. For anything older, use the PDF statements, including archived ones.

What a American Express statement looks like

Amex's sample statement (an older Blue from American Express example on Amex's site) opens with an "Account Summary" of Previous Balance, Payments/Credits, New Charges, Fees and Interest Charged, ending in New Balance. The detail pages follow the same order. "Payments and Credits" is split into Payments and Credits, each with a total, and an asterisk marks dates that are posting dates. "New Charges" lists purchases under the cardmember's name and card ending. Dates are MM/DD/YY, payments and credits are negative, charges are positive, and there is no running balance column. "Fees" and "Interest Charged" each end with a total for the period, followed by year-to-date totals and an "Interest Charge Calculation" table.

Tips for converting American Express statements

Amex also lets you download up to 2 years of transactions as a file, which is fine for recent activity. Use the PDF statement when you need the official previous and new balances, for periods beyond that window, or for a balance-checked conversion. Personal and business Amex cards work the same way.

What you get

  • Excel with real dates and numbers you can sort, filter and total, plus a summary sheet.
  • QuickBooks: a .qbo Web Connect file or the 3-column CSV for bank uploads. See PDF to QBO.
  • Xero CSV, OFX/QFX for Quicken and other tools, or plain CSV.
  • A reconciliation check: opening balance + money in − money out = closing balance.

FAQ

Why is my Amex statement missing pending transactions?
Amex explains that a pending transaction has been approved but not fully processed, and isn't included in your current balance until it's finalized. Once processed, it becomes a posted transaction and shows in your balance and monthly statement. Amex's guide says credit card purchases may post within 3 days but can take up to 30, so a charge that hasn't posted by the closing date won't be on that statement.
Can I download my Amex Year-End Summary into Quicken or QuickBooks?
Yes. Amex's help says the Year-End Summary can be downloaded in QuickBooks, Quicken, Excel, PDF or CSV format, using the "Download" button once you're logged in. For month-by-month balance checks, use the monthly PDF statements.
Can I convert American Express statements to Excel?
Yes. Upload the PDF statement from American Express and download an Excel, CSV, QBO, Xero or OFX file. The first 5 pages every day are free.
Does it work with American Express credit card and business statements?
Yes. Checking, savings, business and credit card statements all work. The AI reads the layout, so it doesn't depend on a template.
How do I know the conversion is right?
Each result is checked against the statement: opening balance plus money in minus money out must equal the closing balance, and running balances are checked row by row.
Are my statements stored?
No. Files are processed in memory and the rows go straight back to your browser. We keep only metadata like the page count for billing.
