What is an OFX file?

OFX (Open Financial Exchange) is the standard format banks use to send transactions to financial software. Microsoft, Intuit and CheckFree announced it in 1997. Unlike a CSV, an OFX file says exactly which field is the date, the amount and the payee. It also gives each transaction an ID and says whether the account is a bank account or a credit card. That's why importing an OFX usually needs no column mapping.

Xero imports OFX and recommends it over CSV when you have a choice. QuickBooks Online accepts .ofx files in Upload from file. Quicken for Windows is the exception: Quicken's support says it can't import OFX files, so choose QFX in "Convert to" for Quicken. Quicken for Mac imports both OFX and QFX.

How to convert CSV to OFX

  1. Download a CSV of transactions from your online banking.
  2. Choose the file above. The tool finds the date, description and amount columns and shows a preview.
  3. Check the dates and signs: money out should be negative.
  4. Pick the account type. Choose "Credit card" for a card export, so the OFX is marked as a card statement.
  5. Click Download and import the .ofx file in your software.

Which CSV layouts work?

Most bank exports work without changes. The tool looks for a header row and recognizes common column names:

  • Date: Date, Transaction Date, Posting Date, Value Date and similar.
  • Amount: one signed Amount column, or separate Debit and Credit, Withdrawals and Deposits, or Paid out and Paid in columns. A Dr/Cr type column is used when amounts have no sign.
  • Description: Description, Payee, Details, Narrative, Memo and similar.
  • Balance and reference, when present.

It also handles files without a header row, files with summary lines above the header, semicolon or tab separators, and European numbers like 1.234,56. If the newest transaction is at the top, the order is reversed so the OFX runs oldest to newest.

Things to check before importing

Day and month

A date like 03/04/2026 can mean March 4 or April 3. The tool switches to day-first when a "day" over 12 proves it. If every date in your file is ambiguous, set "Date order" yourself.

Credit card signs

In OFX, card purchases are negative and payments are positive. Some card CSVs show purchases as positive numbers. If your preview shows purchases as money in, tick Flip the signs under More options.

Ending balance

The OFX file includes an ending balance. The tool takes it from the CSV's Balance column. If your CSV has no balance column, the ending balance in the file is 0.00, and some apps show that as the statement balance.

Plain text

The OFX files we write declare plain ASCII text, so accented letters are simplified (Café becomes Cafe). Payee names are cut to 32 characters, the OFX limit, and the full description goes in the memo.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The CSV is read and converted on your computer, in this page. Nothing is sent anywhere.

FAQ

Is this CSV to OFX converter free?
Yes, with no sign-up and no limits. It runs in your browser, and your file is never uploaded.
