How Far Back Can You Get Bank Statements?

At most large US and UK banks, you can download up to 7 years of statements online. Some banks show only 2 or 3 years, and credit card statements often have shorter limits than bank accounts. For anything older, you can usually request copies from the bank. In the US, federal rules require banks to keep deposit account records for 5 years, so beyond that there's no guarantee.

How far back do banks keep statements online?

It varies by bank and by account type. These limits come from each bank's own help pages, which we checked in October 2026. Follow the links for download steps and sources.

Two patterns stand out. First, statements usually go back much further than transaction downloads, so the PDF statement is the long-term record. Second, credit cards and loans often have shorter online windows than checking and savings accounts.

How long do banks have to keep records?

In the US, at least 5 years for deposit account records. Under the Bank Secrecy Act regulations, a bank must keep "each statement, ledger card or other record on each deposit or share account, showing each transaction in, or with respect to, that account" (31 CFR 1020.410(c)(2)), and those records must be kept "for a period of five years" (31 CFR 1010.430(d)).

The OCC's consumer site, HelpWithMyBank.gov, puts it this way for the banks it supervises: "For any deposit over $100, banks must keep records for at least five years," and banks "may retain these records for longer periods if they choose to do so."

So a bank can often find records older than what it shows online, but past 5 years it isn't required to have them. Rules in other countries differ, so ask your bank.

Why can't I see older statements online?

Because the online window is a bank's own choice, separate from what it must keep. A bank might keep 7 years in its archive but show only 3 in the app. Some banks also remove online access when an account closes, or only keep electronic copies if you had switched to paperless statements.

How do I get statements older than what's online?

  1. Look for a "request statements" option in online banking. Bank of America, for example, lets you request older statements online, up to 7 years back.
  2. Call or send a secure message. Give the account, the exact months you need, and how you want them (PDF if possible).
  3. Ask about fees first. Some banks charge per copy, such as Navy Federal. Others don't: Bank of America's fee schedule lists statement copies as free, and Citi's deposit agreement lists copies of statements issued within the last 7 years at no charge.
  4. For a closed account, follow the steps in how to get bank statements from a closed account.

Download your statements before you need them

The simplest protection is to save your statements yourself. Once a year, download every PDF statement for each account and keep them with your tax records. Statements are what lenders, accountants and courts ask for. And if you need the transactions in a spreadsheet, a PDF statement can be converted at any time, even after the bank's online window has closed.

StatementCheap converts PDF bank and credit card statements to Excel, CSV, QuickBooks and Xero files, checked against each statement's opening and closing balances. The first 5 pages each day are free, and a 150-page pack for a stack of old statements is $6. Convert a statement or see bank statement to Excel.

Do banks charge for old statements?

Some do. Navy Federal lists a fee per statement copy, while Bank of America's fee schedule lists statement copies as free. Ask about fees before you request a long history.
